Healthy Diet vs. Unhealthy Diet during Childhood

In this blog post I wanted to talk about the different types of diets that children can have and how the diet that they are on can affect their current health and their health in the future.

Healthy Diet

Children need to be eating healthy so that way they can grow properly and get enough nutrition. Nutrients come from carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Children need different amounts of nutrients at different ages. Foods that are nutrient-dense and should be in a child's diet are protein, fruits, vegetables, grains, grains and dairy. The amounts for how much per day your child should be eating these foods can be found in the first link under for more information at the end of this post.

It is also important to decrease the amount of sugary foods that children consume. Foods such as fast food, fried food, salty food, and sweet food are all types of food that children should only eat small amounts of.

The Effects

A nourishing diet for children gives them the energy to learn, play, and grow. A diet packed with fruits and vegetables gives children better mental health and well-being which impacts their anxiety levels and sleep. Not only this, but a good diet can help children's physical health.

Having a healthy diet during childhood can create good habits and promote a better lifestyle for the future.

Unhealthy Diet

An unhealthy diet during childhood can affect children's mental and physical health and cause bad habits in the future. An unhealthy diet consists of foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. An unhealthy diet does not mean that the child does not eat any healthy food but rather they are eating too much saturated or sugary foods. In the United States today one study from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC) shows that 6 in 10 young people aged

2 to 19 consume at least 1 sugary drink a day.

The Effects

There are a lot of negative effects to having a bad diet as a child. Poor diets lead to being underweight, overweight, or obese as well as: tooth decay, cardiovascular diseases, an increased risk for cancers and diabetes, and much more.

How does this topic relate to the theme of injury prevention?

The importance of having a healthy diet during childhood is a good prevention technique to injuries of all types in the future. Having a good diet can help children's mental and physical health which can prevent injuries.
